Ep. 26 — Ohio: Addiction Treatment Resources w/Emerald Jenny Foundation's Bill & Jackie Ayers

In this episode, host Dan Skinner interviewed Bill and Jackie Ayars, co-founders of the Emerald Jenny Foundation. You can read all about the Emerald Jenny Foundation, their mission, as well as the life and legacy of Jennifer Emerald Ayars, at https://www.emeraldjennyfoundation.org. You can follow the foundation on Twitter at @emeraldjennyfdn. We also mentioned the website that Dan and his colleague, Berkeley Franz, developed (with support from the Ohio Humanities Council), which you can visit at notfarfromme.org.

In our news round-up we discussed:

  1. The consequences of a federal gag rule in Title X funding, which could affect Planned Parenthood’s ability to provide care to 100,000 Ohio women. To read more, check out this Dispatch article.

  2. The new data on overdose death rates in Ohio that showed an overall decrease of more than 22%, while in some counties (like Franklin county) the overdose death rate actually went up.

  3. The closing of the Youngstown Vindicator, with a special nod to healthcare beat reporter, Bill Alcorn. Dan gave a special shout out to reporter Jessica Hardin, whose article on ambulances in Mahoning Valley is not only an example of local healthcare journalism at its best, but a glimpse of what Ohio will miss in the Vindy’s absence. Also, special thanks to the Center for Community Solutions for supporting Hardin’s work by providing her with a Health and Human Services Journalism Grant.
